How to make a laptop stand for bed (aka. I'm famous!)

1 pictures.

I watch movies/TV in bed quite often now, and it's really uncomfortable to balance the darn thing on my chest while it overheats, possibly causing me chest burns, or potential future sterility. I saw a good looking laptop stand that looked perfect, but at $139 it's about $124 more than I wanted to spend. So I made my own, and it works great so I figured I'd share it with the world Here on instructables.com.

It was promoted to the front page of Instructables today, and it also made lifehacker, both sites I love. Everytime I see something neat, I think "I could make that". Beds, Projection TV's, flowbies, Computer Monitor stands, surround speakers. This time I actually did it, and it came out great. One interesting note about the first version of the laptop stand is that I wanted to make it while Lauren was visiting, and she said I wouldn't have enough time. If I thought I wanted to make it before, at that moment I knew I had to get it done by the time she woke up. I spent the next hour getting the materials (bolt, washer, stick of wood, piece of MDF board, screws), and got home with a half hour left. So I winged it, just going at it with my cordless circular saw, slicing things off as I went. And the funny thing is it all worked right. Amazing.

Take that Lauren! Of course, she's the one that benefited most since she uses it all the time, and now she knows how to motivate me. "I know you could never setup that bookshelf before I'm done cooking" or "I bet you can't build a trailer out of scrap metal next Saturday when I'm gone." Or even "I bet you can't make a DIY flowbie out of a weedwacker motor, coat hangers, a 2 liter soda bottle, razer blades, and duct tape, during a rain storm." Proved her wrong that time, too. Of course, it then blew up while I was using it and was abandoned forever. But it still counts.
